Workshop – Mark Donnelly
Anachronistic Adaptations of ‘Old Swordplay’
A hands-on participatory workshop focused on tactical principles of the Bartitsu, Defense dans le Rue, and the mixed martial defense systems leading up to WWI as well as the rievocazione of research practitioners like Capt. Hutton who looked to the renaissance material of George Silver as applicable to CQB for the British Infantry fighting in Afghanistan during the Second Anglo-Afghan wars. Required equipment for the workshop will consist standard training/fencing kit (Mask, jacket, gauntlets, groin/breast protection) as well as a walking stick length stick (which may also serve as a sabre waster/ singlestick) and a short stick to serve as a knife (No main gauche/ parry daggers please).
This workshop forms the second half of Mark’s presentations for the event. The first part is Kernoozers, Antiquarian Antagonistics, Exercise of Arms, and Victorian Medievalism: (Or how Sir Walter Scott, Capt. Alfred Hutton, Egerton Castle, Sir Richard F. Burton, and E.W. Barton Wright created the Sussex Sword Academy)
