Kernoozers, Antiquarian Antagonistics, Exercise of Arms, and Victorian Medievalism:
(Or how Sir Walter Scott, Capt. Alfred Hutton, Egerton Castle, Sir Richard F. Burton, and E.W. Barton Wright created the Sussex Sword Academy)
In this session we will discuss how the work of a cadre of dedicated martial scholars in the 19th Century tapped into a cultural zeitgeist of fascination with the middle ages and renaissance. Through their reimagining of the past and their research into obscure texts the foundations were laid for modern 21st century practitioners of Historical European Martial Arts and Western Martial Arts. It is worth asking who these revivalists were and why they dedicated so much time and effort into their researches and recreations. These were the giants upon whose shoulders we stood as we initiated the modern revival in the early 1990s.
The audio / visual presentation will last 150 mins. And will be followed by: Anachronistic Adaptations of ‘Old Swordplay’
